Most packing lists for mountain trips are written for generic hiking, not for the specific conditions of Himachal Pradesh or Ladakh. At 3,500 meters, the temperature gap between noon and midnight can exceed 20°C. Phone batteries drain two to three times faster in extreme cold. Standard cotton base layers become a liability once wet from sweat or rain. And the sun at high altitude — reflected off snow or white rock — is genuinely dangerous without proper eye and skin protection. This checklist is built around what those conditions actually require, not what standard travel advice recommends.
1. The 3-Layer Clothing Strategy
Rather than carrying single bulky coats, use a versatile 3-layer clothing system:
• Base Layer (Moisture Management): Synthetic or merino wool thermal tops and bottoms. Avoid cotton innerwear as it retains moisture and reduces body warmth.
• Mid-Layer (Insulation): Fleece jacket or lightweight down sweater to trap body heat.
• Outer Shell (Weather Protection): Windproof and waterproof hooded jacket to protect against cold gusts and rain.
2. Footwear & Eye Protection
• Footwear: Ankle-support hiking shoes or sturdy sneakers with deep lugged rubber soles. Break in new footwear at least two weeks before your trip to prevent blisters.
• Sunglasses: Polarized sunglasses rated UV-400. High-altitude sun reflection off snow or rock can cause snow blindness or severe eye strain.
3. High-Altitude Medical & Personal Care
• High-SPF sunscreen (SPF 50+) and lip balm with sunblock.
• ORS or electrolyte hydration powders.
• Personal prescription medicines, basic pain relievers, anti-nausea tablets, and motion sickness medication for winding mountain roads.
• AMS medication (e.g., Diamox) used under certified medical advice.
4. Electronics & Battery Care in Cold Climates
Extreme cold drains lithium-ion camera and smartphone batteries rapidly. Keep spare batteries and power banks (10,000mAh to 20,000mAh) inside inner coat pockets close to body heat when traveling through high passes like Rohtang, Kunzum, or Apharwat.
